What is Somatic Sex Therapy?

Somatic Description, Lorraine Pentello, Somatic Sex Therapy

Somatic Sex Therapy draws on the concepts of Somatic Therapy and Coaching, adding in the extra element of arousal and sexuality. In this modality all aspects of the human sexual experience are taken into account such as thoughts, emotions, fantasy, body awareness, touch, sound, movement and breath.

What is the difference between Therapy and Coaching?

Coaching helps you to work with what is happening in the present moment and work towards future goals. Therapy incorporates emotional attachments to past experiences and helps to resolve them. With Somatic Sex Therapy we’re working with all the aspects of past, present and future goals with regards to sexuality. It’s a combination of therapy and coaching; working with the aspects that are affecting you in the present moment.

What Happens in a session?

You are a unique human. What you need is going to be different to the next person, so we work together to figure out what works for you and co-create the experience that suits you the best.

The structure of a session is a combination of talk, self-touch, and somatic exercises that bring the focus of attention from the mind and back into the body. This is more than just talking about sex or asking for advice.

Consent is extremely important in this modality. You will never be expected to do anything that you are not comfortable with. We move at a pace that works right for you.

A session might involve being guided in simple breath and body awareness, body scans, movement exercises, pelvic floor training or practising making new sounds, to name just a few. These techniques are designed to help you get used to different ways that your body can feel outside of a sexual experience. You will then be guided in how to do this while self pleasuring or while having a sexual encounter.

Are these sessions in person or online?

Whichever you feel the most comfortable with. Online sessions start at a minimum length of 1 hour and in person start at 90mins. Just choose the type session and session length that works best for you when booking in. If you're not sure which type of session to book I recommend starting with 1 hour online and we can figure it out together from there.
